Community Shared Solar is the newest way for consumers to get the benefit of renewable energy without the need for solar panels on their home or business. Community Solar Farms are being constructed in most utility coverage areas in many states that consumers can subscribe to. One of the many benefits of subscribing to a Solar Farm is the discount provided to you by the Solar Farm owner which equates to an annual savings for the subscriber. The discount offered can vary slightly between different Solar Farm owners, but the normal discount is 10%. Here is how it works. Subscribers reserve a section of a local Solar Farm based on their specific usage trends and current annual cost. Once the farm goes live and starts producing electricity, credits($) will start to be applied to your monthly bill based off of the production of your reserved section. You only pay for $0.90 of every dollar that is applied to your bill, retaining a 10% savings. The credits($) that are produced at these farms follow fluctuation in utility costs, so over time your savings will grow as electricity costs continue to rise. Here is an example of savings projected over 20 years based on a customer that consumes 65,000kWh/year, with an annual cost of $11,700, and a 3% rise in electricity costs per year. Historically, utility costs have risen at a rate of 5% per year.
